The Metadata Service processes queries that retrieve the metadata to be presented in TheDataWeb^? tools. Metadata is information that describes and defines the data. Without the metadata there would be no datasets or data items to select or tabulate in TheDataWeb^? tools. The Metadata Service makes queries to the metadata and geography repositories. It is possible to make multiple connections to a single repository at the same time. It is also possible to limit the type of queries allowed on the Metadata Service.

Process for putting up Metadata and managing it

• Create either MIFXML or MIFText
• (step 1) Load it into the local model metadatabase (public or private) to review it
  • (step 2) For public metadata, it will then be sent to public metadata hub
  • (step 2) For private metadata, it will be sent to the organizations private metadata repository
• (step 3) Public metadata will be replicated from the public hub to all the public metadata servers, this insures that there is not a single point of failure based on metadata in the system. (note: an organization can do the same with internal private metadata)
