DataFerrett: Browser for the TheDataWeb

Determine if you have a proxy internet connection in the browser of your choice.

In Netscape, select File > Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Proxies > If manual proxies is selected and you have an address located in the HTTP:// Proxy slot you will probably not be able to
install the DataFerrett Application but instead will install the DataFerrett Applet.

In Explorer, select Tools > Internet Options >
Connections > LAN Settings.

1. go to My Computer >
2. C: >
3. DataFerrett >
4. startferrett.bat
5. Right click to "Edit" the startferrett.bat file
6. The startferrett.bat file will say:

start java1.3.1\bin\javaw -Djava.security.policy=java.security.policy -classpath ferrett.jar;application.jar org.thedataweb.ferret.application.LaunchApp exit

7. Insert all the following as one line ( with a space before each -):

   -Dhttp.proxyHost=http:/.something.will.be.here.html
   -Dhttp.proxyPort=#### -Dhttp.proxySet=true

   before the " -classpath " (Leave a space on either side of the inserted text)

   Now change the "http:/.something.will.be.here.html" to the proxy host name as you have found in the Preferences/LAN settings (image shown above).

   Also retrieve the port number from the Preferences/LAN settings (image shown above) and replace the "####" with that port number.

My statement looks like this:

SOME PROXY SERVERS MAY NOT RUN THE DATAFERRETT APPLET CORRECTLY. CONTACT THE DATAFERRETT HELP DESK AT 1-866-437-0171 FOR ASSISTANCE OR CALL YOUR SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR AND REQUEST THAT THEY INSTALL THE DATAFERRETT APPLICATION TO YOUR DESKTOP OR YOU CAN INSTALL THE APPLET.
